Turnaround Specialist as a Career.

This is a guide for longtime business professionals, students graduating from college and consultants from other fields wanting to become a turnaround specialist. We decided to create this guide because we receive so many resumes every month. Frankly, almost all applicants do not have the skills or experiences to be a turnaround specialist.

Let me give you what we (and most other turnaround specialist firms) are looking for in a potential employee:

You must have been a significant leader (that is CEO, COO, CFO) in a successful restructuring of a financially distressed firm. The word “successful” is open to interpretation. We define success as keeping the core business intact and profitable, repaying investors and creditors and selling the restructured firm for a good price.
You must have worked as a consultant before. Our best consultants are those that have previously been a consultant.
You must have multi-industry experience and have worked with small, medium and large businesses.
You must be able to produce new business for the firm as well as lead restructuring engagements.
You must be willing to travel (a lot!)
You must understand business restructuring backwards and forwards.

These requirements are restrictive because we need consultants of this caliber to be successful. Probably only one employee application out of 500 meets these qualifications.

So what do you do if you want to become a turnaround specialist? If it something that you want to do, then you must sacrifice to get these qualifications.

As a first step, get a copy of the turnaround specialist handbook, The Insiders Secrets to Saving Your Business: The Step-by-Step Turnaround Guide. Read it cover to cover. This course will give you the foundational knowledge necessary to be successful in this field.

Next, if you have decided with certainty that this is your lifelong profession, you should start your own practice. I know that it will be rough at first, but you will learn what it takes to produce business and work within different industries. Best of all, you will form valuable professional contacts.

This apprenticeship will likely be a two-year undertaking. After you have earned your turnaround credentials, you will be ready to seek a well-paid position with the established firms.
